How to fill out your ‘Google My Business’ pofile, step by step

July 16th, 2016

Once you’ve gotten your postcard in the mail, it’s time to set up your profile the rest of the way.

I’ll go down the list and warn you of any potential hidden dangers.

Name
Use your full business name. Use the exact same business name every time you publish anything online. Your name on your website should be your name on Google should be your name on Wedding Wire. Many photographers try to use relevant keywords to increase their google ranking, but there is a downside. If you lie about your name, you could be suspended for spam. Disparities in your full name are mistrusted by google.

Address
If you have a gallery, use your full address. If you work from home,or have an office that is by appointment only, then you need to have a hidden address. Here’s Google’s article on that topic. All you have to do to hide your address, select “I deliver goods and services to my customers at their locations.”, and leave unselected “I serve customers at my business address”. You will have to give your full address to Google, even if you choose to hide it.

If you’ve chosen to hide your address, you will also have to select a service area. Choose ‘radius’ and set it to under 40 miles. If you serve two different cities (say, Portland and San Fransisco) I’d still recommend you select a smaller radius and just make it clear on the website that you serve other cities as well.

Phone Number:
It is preferable to use a local number, and not an 800 number. It’s better to use one number consistently, even it is from a previous state. Google penalizes disparity.

Category:
The category you select is very important. The area you most want to get new customers in should be the category you select. If you’re primarily a wedding photographer, for example, choose that. You can choose up to 5 categories, just be aware that you’re unlikely to rank for anything outside your primary category.

Hours:
Fill in your hours. List your holiday hours, too.

Photos:
Add a minimum of 5 photographs. The categorization doesn’t matter. Just add five, and choose one to be your ‘main’ profile picture.

Save your changes, and you’re done.
